RST Instructional Sequence 10
Preparation for Teaching

INTRODUCTION

This sequence may look like the easiest you will encounter anywhere in the entire Reading Champs program. But looks are, indeed, deceiving. It is not difficult because of the information; rather because of the tendency to try to teach too much at once. It will take an ability to overlook the forest and concentrate on the individual trees. Reading skills are giant strides made up of many baby steps. You will need to avoid the tendency to teach the alphabet by rote and overlook their individual characteristics and unique sounds.
This is where it all starts to come together. Every bit as important as the knowledge you will make available to your student is how well it is organized and how well the instructional period flows. These two components take planning--more specifically lesson planning--and total preparation for teaching!
