Instructional Sequence 07 Comprehension
|
INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL: Students
will demonstrate an ability to find and determine meaning from
print. Prior knowledge (schema) is of paramount importance. Rote
learning comes
(usually with difficulty) by forced memorization without regard to
purpose or context (often
referred to as the drill-and-kill method). Comprehension is built upon
the ability to understand and apply new information based on what is
previously known. Students should learn how to predict, question, and
determine
literal, interpretive and application-derived meanings.
Reading widely,
with
strategic instruction, helps create capable, motivated, purposeful,
readers.
