IMPORTANT READING FUNDAMENTALS
Physical Components in Reading
Eye Stop:
Eyes make fixations, or eye stops, on each line of print. Recognition of
words or individual letters occurs during this brief moment.
Eye Span: The amount of print seen (recognized) in
each eye stop. The goal is to expand the amount of print which is recognized
during each fixation.
Regressions: Also called eye skips. Eyes move
backwards, rereading the same material. This activity slows reading rates
and inhibits comprehension.
Sub-vocalizing: Sounding-out or saying words under the
breath. Like reading out loud (which generally limits reading rate to 160
words per minute or less), this tends to create word-by-word reading and
slows or prohibits fluency.
Eye Teaming: Fluent reading is dependent on
successful eye-teaming (the professional term is binocular fusion).
Binocular vision requires that both eyes are working in consort. This
affects successful tracking or following along a line of print.
Visual Perception: Problems with visual perception (such as
dyslexia) may reveal themselves as reversals and word confusion. Generally,
these perception problems can only by accurately identified by an
optometrist or a psychologist. These professionals, or a trained special
education teacher, can provide advice or recommend activities regarding
visual/perceptual concerns.
Directionality: A surprising number of older students
lack directionality and, therefore, have problems following along
(tracking) a line of print.
