RST/001:
INTRODUCTION: Program Philosophy and Features

Today, more and more families are opting for alternative education environments. Home teaching, tutoring groups, peer-tutoring, charter schools, and innovative practices within traditional classroom environments are challenging teaching methods which have dominated the education community for nearly a century. Many children, some estimates as high as fifty percent, need additional assistance (outside of the traditional classroom) in mastering state standards and preparing for high-stakes standardized tests. This is true across the board, and especially true in the critical areas of literacy and reading.

Everyone teaching students to read has been looking for classroom-tested techniques to expand their inventory of tried-and-true methods and tools in their “teacher’s toolbox.”

The Reading Champs program is not intended to replace established school curricula or productive reading programs. It offers a supplement for non-professional “coaches”--parents, tutors, classroom teaching assistants and hard-working teachers an “Smart  Start” how-to primer for helping all students to become better readers. It also helps connect the technical language of the school with real-life, at home, teaching and tutoring.

The hardest part of learning how to coach a subject as broad as literacy, or even the less-broad subject of “reading,” is knowing where to start. The wisest sages have repeatedly given us the only real answer: “Start at the very beginning …”

This is the plan for Rita Wirtz’ Reading Champs Ready-Set-TEACH! (RST) Library and Common Sense Mini Lesson (CSML) Instructional Skill Handbooks. We start at the beginning and move upward; following easy-to-understand, step-by-step research-proven reading activities for students and coaches to do together in one-hour units or “chunks” of 20 minutes or less.

However, most important, this series is prepared and written to empower those working with frustrated, struggling, and often failing, readers. Teachers and teaching assistants will find new ideas to fill learning gaps or validate and strengthen what is already working well. To ensure that no child is left behind, it is important to foster a seamless, coordinated effort to reach and teach children at home as well as at school. As parents are the child’s first and best teaching partners, well-informed parents can assist with timely and appropriate intervention. With all of the educational stakeholders on the same page, teachers can share these mini-lessons with families for helpful and reinforcing at-home tutoring.

PROGRAM FEATURES

  • Most Reading Champs materials are provided with individual Flesch-Kincaid Reading Levels.
  • Each handbook is provided as a download-and-print (.pdf) file. Save this file to your computer disk for future use. Make additional copies as needed. Handbooks are also available as individually printed items at a slightly higher cost.
  • .Pdf file formats provide access to multiple, always clean originals. E-Books save money by being non-taxable and requiring no shipping and handling costs.
  • A classroom copyright release for free distribution to students and assistants is provided with this handbook.  Copying and/or offering this handbook for sale or resale is prohibited without separate specific authorization.
  • RST and CSML materials are available as single handbooks, in topical sections, and in complete libraries to meet the unique needs of each client.
  • Like IVE Focus Texts, Reading Champs RST and CSML materials never go out of date. As new information comes available, the master documents are updated and provided to members by e-book links listed in the Reading Champs Coach's monthly newsletter.
