The Essay

Argumentation, Information, and Persuasion

by Donald E. Werve, Jr., M.Ed.

I heard one teacher compare building an essay (which is what you are really doing) to putting together a BLT sandwich.  The first slice of bread is the thesis statement; the bacon, lettuce, and sliced tomato are the three argument paragraphs; and the second slice of bread is the summary.  You talent as a writer adds the mayonnaise (and in my case cheese and peanut better) which makes the sandwich uniquely yours.

Throughout this paper, to put the entire matter in an overall perspective, I will use spoken statements to illustrate each of these.
