Predicting and Questioning
Reading Comprehension
A reading champion becomes personally involved with what is to be read
before actually beginning reading. Making predictions and asking
questions are keys to both reading rate and comprehension. The goal is
to get an idea of the whole work, develop an interest in the topic, and
determine prior knowledge about the subject. Instructors should
model how to predict or consider what will happen next, in view of
background events, characters involved, and the situation.
Questions offer a road map of what to look
for. Good readers continually ask questions and make predictions based
on what is already known or what has already been read. They then read
to find out if they are correct. Questions stimulate thinking because
they force the reader to make use of prior knowledge and read between
the lines--often what is not said can be as important as what is stated.
