Reading for Comprehension

Structural Features of Text

Having a purpose gives meaning to reading. Comprehension is the goal of reading, and reading instruction, at all levels. Comprehending and interpreting what is read is dependent on schema; concepts acquired through past experiences.

In order to comprehend well, the ability to understand the meanings of individual words, being able to group words into units instead of reading word-by-word, and being able to discern between main ideas and details, are all critical. But the most important thing is having a purpose to read; to be able to answer the question, "Why am I going to read (or why am I reading) this material?"

All readers bring meaning to words that serve as triggers to thought. Reconstructing of experiences helps words to take on meaning. So always take the time to determine background knowledge and fill in any gaps. In this handbook, we deal with the process of understanding and interpreting meaning and developing a tool to encourage a more in-depth style of reading.
