COACH'S
EVALUATION GUIDE
This handbook is intended for reading teachers or coaches as a brief
introduction to Corrections and
Interventions (CSML-036) and Informal
Reading Inventory (IRI) (CSML-037).
Errors in word study are often referred to as miscues. Emerging or
underachieving readers can be taught more quickly when we understand the
miscues, or mistakes, being made by the student. The following
section—Corrections and Interventions—will assist you with techniques and
practices to handle common reading errors and difficulties.
Miscue analysis allows the coach to observe and record the student’s
oral reading. Using an Informal Reading Inventory (IRI) and recording the types
of errors enables you to decide which lessons you will need to re-teach. The
reading mini lessons in this series will help you accelerate the reading
process. You may want to tape record one of these diagnostic sessions; if not,
definitely take notes.
