Learning to use a dictionary
Skills Development Resource
There is often a need to
clarify means of many familiar words through attention to multiple meanings or multinyms,
words whose meanings (and pronunciations) vary with context. The denotation
of a word is the primary dictionary definition (literal meaning); the connotation
is the interpretation of the word with its emotional meaning. Consider that a
word is rarely just a word made up of specific letters; it usually has more
than one meaning and may have significance beyond its dictionary definition. It
frequently has suggestive overtones as it means only what a person thinks it
means.
Complete dependence on the dictionary definition may
result in error. The reader must be able to understand the concept that
familiar words often have different meanings according to the context in which
they are used. This is best accomplished by combining reading with dictionary
exercises. When doing this, the goal is to recognize the proper in-context interpretation
of a word by substituting differing dictionary meanings to decide which of the
meanings is most correct to complete the meaning of the sentence. To refine
this process, learners should practice how to deliberately infer meaning from
what went before and, if necessary, reading ahead for clues to meaning.
