Contractions

(Structural Analysis #4)

Remember how we described affixes as sort of like a train. Well, using an analogy, a contraction is a little like taking a letter (a car), or even a few letters (cars), from the middle of the train and making it shorter, lighter, and faster.

A contraction is a short form of two words. The words are put together (sort of like a compound word) and then one or more letters are removed and replaced with an apostrophe. As examples: 1). ‘we are’ becomes ‘weare,’ then the ‘a’ is removed and replaced with the apostrophe (‘) which leaves us with the contraction we’re; and 2). ‘She is’ becomes ‘sheis,’ then the ‘i’ is removed and replaced with an apostrophe () which leaves us with the contraction ‘she’s.’

It’s just that simple! Don't you agree?
