Teaching New Sounds and Letters
(Phonics Element # 2)

This handbook provides a 10-part teaching lesson format and practice exercises for learning new sounds and letters. It is written as a guide for Reading Champ coaches in sequencing instructional activities from a session opener through the keeping of teaching records for the session.
  1. Provide a strong set or opener to create interest and motivate the student. In the CSML format, this usually appears as "Why do I have to learn this?"

  2. Review the sounds from lessons, letter, word, concept, or pattern. In the CSML lesson plan format, this appears as Prequisites for Learning.

  3. Introduce the new sound, letter, word, concept, or pattern to be covered in this lesson.

  4. Read the new story, article, or textbook portion which reinforces the instructional set.

  5. Find other examples of the concept in print; in books or by "reading the room" wall-print
    (refer to print-rich environment).

  6. Do a strong review of, or close to, the instructional set. In some cases, this might consist of a pointing out how this new knowledge will be useful to the student. (Refer back to "Why do I have to learn this?"

  7. Continue reinforcement with practice, drill, and repetition.

  8. Continually check for understanding; aim for mastery.

  9. Re-teach, if needed, or proceed to the new sound, letter, word, concept, or pattern to be covered in the next lesson.

  10. Record what was covered in the lesson, what actions were taken, and the results.

STUDENTS ALSO NEED TO LEARN
HOW THEY CAN VALIDATE THEIR LEARNING
AND IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS BY INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
WORKING ON THEIR OWN (OR WITH A FRIEND).
