Recognizing Sight Words
Beginning
and emerging readers should learn to look for letters and words
everywhere--in names, on street signs, labels, cereal boxes (where they
will also find graphic clues), etc. Use experience, environmental
print, and word lists to teach sight words. They should also realize
there are plenty of opportunities to find these words in a variety of
contexts.
Students need to start with the easiest words first. It is helpful to
begin with concrete objects from around the house or classroom as most
sight word lists are full of abstract words which are challenging to
the beginning and emerging reader. (For example, what is a "the?")
In creating your word lists (items for a print-rich environment) and
items for a word-wall, be sure to include the basic sight words that
are said to make up 50% of all reading materials. One of the best
things to start with can be the student's own name.
STUDENTS ALSO NEED TO LEARN
HOW THEY CAN VALIDATE THEIR LEARNING
AND IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS BY INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
WORKING ON THEIR OWN (OR WITH A FRIEND).
