TEACHING AND LEARNING LETTERS
(The Alphabet as a Language Skill)

There are few elements of the English language that are as important as “our” alphabet. Using only 26 symbols, we have constructed tens of thousands of different words which we use to describe every aspect and activity which make up our lives. We will get into those words later in these Instructional Handbooks but before we do, you need to understand what these symbols are and how they are used to represent sounds.

Simply let it be said that we believe the English alphabet to be the most fundamental  element which make up our ability to read.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ALPHABET

Just like people, some letters are short, some are tall; some are sort of thin, some are medium sized, and some are wide. Some letters have tails and some have lines moving through them. Some letters are doubled up in words and others never stand together. But they are all symbols for sounds, and those sounds make syllables, words, sentences, and even the biggest book you have ever seen—they are almost all made up of letters.

And even numbers have names which are made from letters!
