GUIDED READING:
DIRECTED READING ACTIVITIES (DRAs)
This time-tested
instructional / learning guide is useful when you want to teach/learn an article,
story chapter, or other textual materials at the instructional level. This
means the student can read a selection orally having trouble with only one or
two words out of twenty words with correct comprehension of three out of four
questions.
With minor assistance, by the end of the DRA, the student should be able to
recognize all words in the selection and understand the material completely.
(Of course, the focus in this book is on the word study.)
This Reading Champs Mini-lesson deals, in depth, with the five steps in a DRA, which are:
- Readiness
- Guided
silent reading
- Discussion
- “Independent” silent and/or oral reading
- Follow-up
STUDENTS
ALSO NEED TO LEARN
HOW THEY CAN VALIDATE THEIR LEARNING
AND IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS BY INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
WORKING ON THEIR OWN (OR WITH A FRIEND)
