TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCEDURES
Formalized
learning is a working partnership between a student and a teacher. When
students are motivated and confident in their ability to learn, nothing
can stop them from gaining knowledge.
A typical Reading
Champs guided reading lesson
or mini-lesson consists of a Directed Reading Activity (DRA)—an
activity which
develops or reviews a specific skill. DRAs will generally be used to
teach word
recognition or comprehension. When using a DRA, it is important that
the RC
Reading Coach (reading teacher) use a consistent lesson format.
Mini lessons should
be planned to
last from five to twenty minutes, generally focused on one concept at a
time.
At the end of each lesson, be sure to summarize what has been learned.
If
material is assigned for Independent Study, be sure to check that work
(working
with the student will be most effective) for accuracy.
And, it is
important to
continually review (and re-teach if necessary) materials within the
planning
stage for other lessons.
In this handbook we
will be
working with the details of planning and conducting a Reading Champs
Instructional Plan.
