Home Schooling Parents and Students!

Charter School Administrators and Teachers!
Traditional Teachers and Reading Coaches!

Almost every student, from preschool on through adult, has the potential of becoming a reading champion. But to make it happen, teaching practice has to follow the dictum of John Dewey, reaching students where they are at instead of where we think they should be. We need to realize that each student is unique--there is no such thing as a "standard" student. And then we have to start teaching to each individual's wants and interests.

What is a Reading Champ?

"Reading Champs" are people, of any age or gender, who have the power to enrich their lives because they are more able to read, understand, and make use of any kind of text.
They aren't smarter than average people, because they are average people. They just seem to be smarter because they are usually better informed! They are easy to spot because ...
  • Reading Champs read!
  • They are usually more involved in the world around them. They know the stories behind the sound bites on the six o'clock news.
  • They read to learn. And, more important, then know how to read to learn.
  • They usually read faster than the average person, and they retain more of what they read.
  • They read for enjoyment. They build personal libraries of biographies, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and--quite often--old textbooks.
  • They are almost never bored.
  • They would rather read than watch TV or play video games.
  • They are usually better spellers and more interesting speakers. They often have higher self esteem and are more self confident.
  • They are usually more interesting because they are better conversationalists.
  • They are often writers as well as readers.
  • They enjoy greater job opportunities and are usually more capable in seeking out more personally-satisfying jobs.
  • They are more likely to be promoted because of their greater ability to communicate.
And anyone can be a Reading Champ because they are made, not born!

You
can become a Reading Champ, and even a Coach for future Reading Champs. You can help your children (or your students) become reading champs as well.

ABOUT THIS PAGE
Welcome to the Reading Champions temporary home page.  This will serve as the "plywood screen" of our domain during the next several months' construction.

The first thing we would like to point out is the structure and simplicity of the page, and of all the pages you might visit while you are here.  This is done to allow the materials, rather than some all-too busy pages, to speak for themselves.

The headings on each of the 11 Section Pages are identical with the exception that the link on each page you are visiting is a contrasting color and has no link.  There are subsidiary pages from most of these Section pages are also color coded.

This site created and managed by IVE Focus Text Publishers and Donald E. Werve, Jr., M.Ed.

This site, and the Reading Champions program is being redeveloped in its entirety.  Both should be totally ready for introduction in April, 2007.  But in the meantime, you have a two-sided opportunity.  The First Edition site and program, the ones that have helped thousands of students move from frustrated readers to Reading Champs, are still in operation and available at http://www.readingchamps.com. The new Second Edition contains all of the original power
but is enhanced by ten more years of in-the-classroom development.

Is Reading Champs really all that Powerful?

A classroom teacher from northern California answers that question
... and more.  Names have been blocked out for reasons of privacy.

Dear Rita,

So seldom in life do people take the time to appreciate those who make an impact on their lives.  I had the opportunity to be part of your class at ******* University three years ago. As a new student in the credentialing program, I feel fortunate to have had you as my first instructor.  Although I only spent a couple months with you, I gained a lifetime of wisdom. You are a phenomenal educator and I an so glad you touched my life.

Today, I am in my third year of teaching.  I spent the first two teaching first grade and now I am the Title I teacher at ******** ********** School in ******* *****.  I feel as if this is my true passion.  I thank you for teaching me the importance of being positive and being enthusiastic about education.  I believe in my students and think this makes them believe in themselves.  I also use your book Reading Champions on a regular basis.  It is a great resource and you provide simple strategies for any skill I need to teach.  My personal favorite: ME-Model Everything.

I want you to know how much I appreciate your guidance.  I am so glad I became a teacher, and I know it is my mission.

My sincere thanks,
KL
M.S. (Education, Reading, and Literacy)
